Medical Marijuana 101: The Basics

Medical Marijuana is commonly divided into three categories: Sativas, Indicas and hybrids of the two.

Sativas are commonly used during the daytime.  Medical benefits of Sativas:

  • Stimulating/energizing
  • Increased sense of well-being, focus, creativity
  • Reducing depression, elevating mood
  • Reducing pain
  • Relieve headaches/migraine/nausea
  • Increased appetite

Indicas are primarily used in the evening/nighttime.  Medical benefits of Indicas:

  • Providing relaxation and reducing stress
  • Relaxes muscles/spasms
  • Reduces pain/inflammation
  • Improves sleep
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Reduces nausea
  • Reduces intraocular pressure
Hybrids are crosses between the two other types.  There are over 200 hybrids each with unique names such as Blue Dream, Chemdawg or 9 lb Hammer.  Some hybrids have more of the Sativa effects and others more the Indica effects, while some are a balance of the two.

The Endocannabinoid System

Cannabis is a flowering plant. When cannabis is grown for medicine, the flowers (also known as buds) and leaves of the female plant are cured resulting in what we generally regard as cannabis or, more commonly, “marijuana”.  Highly versatile, cannabis provides relief for many different ailments and symptoms with a high degree of safety. Sound too good to be true?  It's not. The reason that cannabis benefits so many different illnesses and ailments boils down to the fact that some of the active components of the cannabis plant mimic many of our own chemicals to promote a healthy balance – the Endocannabinoid System (ECS).

The ECS is controlled by chemicals that our body produces called endocannabinoids. Our endocannabinoids are responsible for keeping many of our biological functions in balance such as sleep, appetite, the immune system, pain and more. When the body gets out of balance and moves into a state of stress, endocannabinoids go to work to fix the problem.

So why does cannabis benefit so many different illnesses? The short answer is cannabis is highly effective in treating pain and inflammation by its interactions with the endocannabinoid system.
